Plant Highlights: Autumn Fern

Sizes Available: 2.5″ 32ct flats. Quart 12ct flats. Individual Gallons

Season of Interest: Evergreen. Young fronds emerge coppery, and mature to green.

It makes sense for our first Fern highlight to be a popular item, and everyone seems to love the Autumn fern! (Also known as Japanese Wood Fern, Copper Shield Fern, or Japanese Shield Fern.) The Autumn fern is a favorite among many for its hardiness, and beautiful color change from copper colored young fronds, to a rich green with maturity. Native to Japan, China, and Taiwan; this fern amazes in the Southern landscape. Shade loving, this low spreading, frilly fern mimics a groundcover in its growing habit. It is more tolerant of dry soils, and more drought tolerant than other varieties; but still performs better in a shady spot with regular watering. In our Zone 7B, this fern is considered evergreen. Topping out at about 2 feet tall, this smaller fern is perfect for mass plantings or edging jobs. It can also be brought indoors to brighten up your living space.

Plant Highlights: Daylily

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERACommon Name: Daylily

Botanical Name: Hemerocallis

Sizes Available: Gallons and 12 count Quart flats

Season of Interest: All year (blooming Spring-Autumn)

Spring is beginning to give us a few breaths of warm air, and it has certain early bloomers waking up. Buds are appearing around the nursery, and new growth on so much more. The tiny green heads of the Daylily are beginning to arise. An old-fashioned favorite. Blooms in every conceivable color combination. Beautiful foliage. Fragrant. Easy to care for, with great success even for beginner gardeners. This is what the Daylily brings to the landscape.

A best friend to the Southern planter, the Daylily is a staple across the US. This amazing plant is in the running for everyone’s garden favorite due to all of it’s wonderful qualities. Daylilies have a very long bloom window (typically 3-4 weeks, with new flowers everyday), which makes them perfect for display areas. Daylily use is so prolific, that there is special vocabulary in place to help gardeners and landscapers alike choose the best plant for their environment. Information on the plant abounds! Plantworks Nursery grows so many different varieties we couldn’t begin to cover them all in this post. They all deserve recognition, and so we will post more about each at a later date.

One of our most requested Daylilies is Stella de’Oro (pictured above). The 2 inch golden blooms can number in the hundreds on a mature plant, and are very fragrant. If spent flower stalks are removed, this variety will continue to bloom into the Autumn season. Very hardy in our Zone 7B. As far as popularity goes, Stella is above and beyond the rest.

Price Tagging 2017

Plantworks offers the option of price/picture tagging plants for our clients. Picture tagging alone is a complimentary service we give to those who ask. Price tagging is a paid for service we offer on sign up once a year. All of our plants come complete with a simple, white ID tag with every purchase.

Pricing Database:

At the beginning of each year, the “Customer Price Tag Database,” is sent out to clients who have received tagging services in the past, or those interested in the service. This is essentially an MS Excel worksheet that lists every plant in our main inventory. Each entry will have a unique plant code, as well as both the unit, and individual wholesale price.

Customers will use a formula, or their own price points, to fill out the database. We can integrate SKU’s and barcodes as well, if needed. We will use the information provided to produce the tags all year long. Small changes are easily managed throughout the year, but a complete overhaul of pricing is impossible once it is set. We keep a sharp eye out for mistakes or needed changes.

Tagging Options:

tags

There are two types of tags offered from Plantworks Nursery:

  • 1″ X 6″ white, plastic stick tag: $.08 per tag
  • 1.75″ X 2.75″ white, paper sticker tag: $.20 per tag

Scannable barcodes can be added as mentioned. All tags include the following basic information:

  • Company Name
  • Company Phone #
  • Retail Price
  • Plant Name
  • Plant Potting Size

Some limited customization is available. Specific fonts, and simple shape logos are common. Unfortunately, there are no color options. (Black ink on white tags only.)

Included in the price of each tag is an installation cost. Tags will be placed in the appropriate plant prior to delivery.

Special Notes:

A common issue that will arise during the year concerns plants that were not originally included in the database. This could be anything from special grow leftovers, to limited time items. These plants are not included in our regular inventory, and therefore will not appear on the ‘Customer Price Tag Database.’
